DA NANG MILITARY BATTLEFIELD TOUR

Retrace the U.S. Military Footprint in Da Nang — 1965–1975

This private, customized battlefield tour is designed for U.S. veterans, veterans’ families, military historians, and anyone with a serious interest in the Vietnam War who wants to revisit the former U.S. military installations and operational areas around Da Nang.

Rather than simply visiting historical landmarks, the tour focuses on the military landscape that once surrounded Da Nang — the airfields, naval facilities, medical installations, engineering and logistics sites, defensive positions, communications and radar facilities, landing areas, and R&R locations that supported U.S. forces during the war.

Da Nang became one of the most important U.S. military hubs in I Corps, supporting large-scale Marine, Army, Navy, and other U.S. military operations throughout northern South Vietnam. The area developed into a complex network of bases and support facilities extending from the Marble Mountains and coastal landing areas to Monkey Mountain and Tien Sa.

During the tour, we will follow this military footprint and examine how these locations were connected and what roles they played during the war.

Key locations include:

• Marble Mountain Air Facility — a major Marine aviation installation associated with Marine Aircraft Group 16 and aviation operations in I Corps.
• Navy Hospital — part of the military medical network supporting U.S. forces in the Da Nang area.
• Seabee Bridge / Han River — an important example of U.S. Navy Seabee engineering and military infrastructure.
• Freedom Hill / Hill 327 — former high-ground military positions overlooking the Da Nang area.
• Red Beach — associated with the arrival and landing of U.S. Marines in Da Nang in 1965.
• Monkey Mountain — including areas associated with communications, radar, observation, and military installations.
• 95th Evacuation Hospital — representing the medical support system behind U.S. combat operations.
• Camp Tien Sha — part of the U.S. naval and logistics complex supporting operations in the Da Nang area.
• Former R&R areas — providing a different perspective on the everyday life of American servicemen during deployment.

Much of the physical military infrastructure has disappeared or been transformed by modern Da Nang. The buildings may be gone, but the terrain remains. By standing on the ground, studying the geography, and comparing the former military footprint with the modern landscape, we can better understand how Da Nang functioned during the Vietnam War.
